Pollution Characteristics of Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers in Water Surrounding Plastic Enterprise

Details
Abstract: Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) is a new kind of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Concentrations of 13 kinds of PBDE congeners (BDE-17, 28, 47, 66, 85, 99, 100, 138, 153, 154, 183, 203, 209) in water surrounding a typical plastic production site and natural water in South Jiangsu were determined with the solid phase extraction (SPE) -gas chromatography (GC) method, to study concentration level, composition distribution and pollution characteristics of the pollutants in the area. Results show that the PBDEs could be all detected except BDE- 203. The total concentration range of Σ13PBDEs was not detected (ND) ~ 363 ng·L-1 , and average mass concentration of each homologue was ND ~ 42.6 ng·L-1 . BDE-209 was the homologue with the largest mass abundance, butits detection rate was only 25.0%. The detection rate of BDE-17, BDE-28 and BDE-100 was higher, i.e., 75.0%, 75.0% and 58.3% respectively. The detection rate of low bromine generation diphenyl ether was significantly higherthan high bromine generation diphenyl ether. The 13 kinds of PBDEs could be all detected in nature water, and the concentration range of PBDEs was 0.161 ~ 1.83 ng·L-1 . The concentration levels of PBDEs in water surrounding enterprise was 5-100 times higher than the natural water, which should be paid more attention regarding to PBDEs pollution in water surrounding typical enterprise.
